How can I check the size of my mailbox ie. determine how close to the limit I
am?

You would have to check at the server side. If your site is hosted
somewhere, you can check by logging into the admin page (cpanel, or other)
and check your mailbox size from in there. Sometimes you can check your
webmail interface and it will show (depending on the software used).

Otherwise, you would have to call your ISP to find out.
