Check if a file exists on a remote server

how can I verify from a windows 2000 server if a file (example
"http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/image.gif") exists on a remote server ?

You could open a browser and type "http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/image.gif" into
the address bar and hit enter, but for some reason I think you meant to ask
a different question :-)
