Check disk problem...

I recently ran the check disk program in Windows XP Pro as I have many times
before.
It reached stage 5 of 5 before it could complete I had to shut the computer
down. When I restarted the computer there was the check disk screen with the
following ..."A disk check has been scheduled for drive C. Cannot open volume
for direct access. The disk check is finished." and windows boots.
I now get this same screen and message everytime I start windows. Also
when I tryy to run the check disk program I get the same screen and message
...."A disk check has been scheduled for drive C. Cannot open volume for
direct access. The disk check is finished."
I think this may be causing some performance issues such as slowness and
delays when I start windows up.
What can I do to rectify this problem and get check disk working again?
Can anyone help?

"before it could complete I had to shut the computer down. " Why was
that?

Stage 5 involves checking unused cluaters. How large is C and how much
free disk space does it have?

What SP updates for Windows XP are installed?

"If you have a bootable install cd for XP run chkdsk from the recovery
console:

Set your PC BIOS to boot from CDROM, Boot from the CD
Select the first option R Repair/Recovery Console
Select your Windows partition by number (usually 1)
Login to XP with administrator password
Run CHKDSK /P from the command line

Rinse and Repeat until no errors are shown, run CHKDSK /P :X for each
drive letter (X) "

Gerry. Thank You for the informational reply!
I started my computer today and as it started up check disk began as it
should and performed as normal. Strange that it would do this (operate as
it should) after I post the problem.
Gerry, I'll keep this useful info and the post in case this problem re-occurs.

Thank You Very much !
