Make sure before running chkdsk, that there is a full and complete backup of
important data. In certain circumstances it can result in corruption and
data loss that can't be recovered.
Why is chkdsk running? Did you tell it to run, or did it just run on it's
own?
Chkdsk can be run from the recovery console. Use the command chkdsk /p to
check for and correct errors and chkdsk /r to check for errors and confirm
that all sectors are readable. /r implies /p.

Download a drive diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacturer's web
site. That will create a bootable floppy or CD. Boot from that and run the
diagnostics on the drive.
