CHECK DATE AND TIME ERROR

XP HOME EDITION
UPON STARTUP
Why do I get the message : Default BIOS settings have been loaded due to
BIOS update or CHECKSUM isssue?

Can I safely do as it says (F1 key to get into set-up)
I have been doing F2 - continue, I don't want to encourage a virus by doing
something I don't understand.

Thanks much

KAREN

This is a hardware issue, not an XP OS issue. Start by replacing the
battery on the motherboard. If you still have problems contact the computer
manufacturer's tech support or a good computer repair tech.

I have a similar error message/issue, not sure if this is identical in
resolution as suggested below and could use some help please...

Firstly
I get this error message upon XP home edition start up - BIOS/checksum error
and the choice to hit F1 or F2. I have been hitting F1, and the system does
boot up - however my PC/system time and date reverts to 2001. As a result it
aslo seems all my system restore dates & times/ Norton Ghost dates/times have
reverted to 2001 dates/times.
Secondly
I have aslo recently experienced "losing" days worth of e mails on Outlook
express and have tried to use system restore to help but it has not

Are these two problems related?? Is the problem solved by replacing the
motherboard battery?? or do i have to worry about a virus/trojan etc??

Any help form Rock et al greatly appreciated

Thanks

Replace the CMOS battery. If you are losing time and getting BIOS errors
this is a good sign that the battery is failing. They usually cost under
five bucks.

Incorrect date and time can also cause other problems.

Many thanks for your prompt attention Wesley- I will try replacing the
battery ...don't know if I can do this myself - may have to bite the bullet
and get a PC repair man out to me.

Re Outlook express - did I understandyour point correctly that the losing e
mails issue is also related and hence repairable by replacing the battery??

Look at the three links in my other post and look at your computer manual.
The most common batteries look similar to a nickel, the five-cent coin. No
big deal to replace one. Unless you have a really old machine and the
battery is soldered in place, that takes tools and more work.

This one has plenty of pictures...

Time/date issues may or may not be the problem for lost mail files.
Replacing the battery will not bring any files back that may have been lost,
for whatever reason.
