hi guys

running xp pro / sp3 / totally updated
a month or so ago, tried to run a chkdsk for C drive; as usual the computer
said it would be done at next boot.
but I keep getting an error message

"checking file system on c:
The type of the file system is NTFS
Cannot open volume for direct access
Windows has finished checking this disk ...

first of all, what would cause this? 2nd: why does it keep repeating every
bootup? 3rd: how to correct and get CHKDSK running again, or at least to
drop the error message?

thanks,

tZ

Hi Torobi,

It might be a bit dangerous to even think about repairing it, so they better find/make some backups.

Try to get a new drive and copy C: to it (use any application you like). Do NOT make it an 1:1 copy. If system fail to boot from this copy try 1:1.
On the new drive run c: /FS:NTFS /V , then chkdsk c: /V /R

==Danger ahead, do not try (I warned you)==
You can try running convert c: /FS:NTFS /V , then chkdsk c: /V /R on their HDD.
If you can't convert maybe fixmbr could do something.

Regards
Chris

"Cannot Open Volume for Direct Access"

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823439
Note: The MS article is only for SP2, if you've already got SP3
installed...read on:

First click Start menu button my computer - right click the drive you
want to scan properties tools then, check now.
It will then schedule a Chkdsk check when you reboot your pc.

??? might work ???
