How large is your hard disk? How is it formatted? NTFS or FAT32? Is the hard disk partitioned?

How long are you leaving it to continue after it reaches 41%. If it has encountered a bad sector it may take a long time to effect a repair!

Hope this helps.

I'm having a similar problem, freezing at 33%, FAT32,
lots of space, I don't believe there are partitions, how do I know?
Are you suggesting one leave chkdsk run for hours if need be?
I'll leave it on and go to bed. Any other suggestions, much appreciated. Susan

I'm having the same problem, freezing at 33%, FAT32,
how do you know if you have partitions, I don't believe I do,
only 25% space used, are you suggesting just letting chkdsk run
for several hours if required, if so, I'll leave it on and go to bed,
thanks, any other suggestions much appreciated. Susan

Susan

How large is the hard disk? Right click your My Computer icon and select Properties. What is the cluster size? To determine the cluster size try using the Analyse function of Disk Defragmenter. The information is given in the Report. I doubt otherwise that the Disk Defragmenter will run but the analysis operation may.

Before running chkdsk run Disk Cleanup to remove temporary internet files and empty the recycle bin. It can remove the obstacle chkdsk has encountered. Let chkdsk run overnight if you wish. If you have a large hard disk this programme can take a while if it has to effect repairs.

Remember just because you have a large hard disk it can be formatted incorrectly rendering part of the hard disk unusable. That is what my questions are seeking to determine.

To see what is on your hard drive you may need to change a number of settings. Select Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View, Advanced Settings, and check "Show hidden files and folders". Whilst there uncheck "Hide File Extensions". Also check "Display the contents of system folders". Next enter Windows Explorer and select View, Details and then select Choose Details -check all options except "Comments" and "File System".

Hope this helps.
