chat programs & virus protection

I would like to know why when I am on yahoo, icq, and msn I get logged on and off and the messages freeze up just for them to all the sudden to pop up...especially yahoo. MSN just keeps login me in and out. ICQ drops out
About the virus protection I am quierying is that I have an older version of Norton's that came with my Dell computer. I would like to change it to McAfee. Need help plz!!
