Charts generated by Data Analysis/Regression Add-in

I've tried this on three different Excel 2007 installations in both
2003 and 2007 file formats:

When I run a regression model on a set of data, the charts generated
by the Add-in cannot be moved, resized, etc. without the chart
literally "falling apart". Specifically, the Residual Plots, Line Fit
Plots, and Normal Probability Plots. When I click on a chart to resize
or drag it, parts of the chart move properly while other parts are
left behind...

Are they real charts, or collections of shapes that look like charts, and
what you're doing is dragging around a subset of these shapes?

They act more like an ungrouped set of objects than the charts
produced by the Analysis Toolpak in Excel 2003. Also, all the charts
I've created by hand work as expected.

No luck there either. I can grab and move what seems to be a "layer"
containing the data points and some parts of the graphs, but lables,
legend, axis data, border...all left behind. Interesting - when I move
what I can and start clicking about the graph, parts start to
reappear.

Other bugs with the Regression utility: Though I select line fit plot,
I don't get one. The Normal Probability Plot is shown as a bar chart,
not a scatter plot.

I wonder if the Analysis Toolkit was simply not updated to work with
Excel 2007...although everything else seems to have changed, this and
Solver both look identical to 2003.

Can you perhaps select all the objects and group them somehow ? That might
fix the problem.

pokorski -

I observe the same behavior in the Regression tool of Excel 2007 Trial.

After I move (click and drag) a chart, observe that only parts have moved,
click somewhere on the moved chart so that the other parts reappear, and
save the chart, all seems well. Before saving, the ghosts of some of the
unmoved parts stay in their original locations.

The "Line Fit Plot" appears originally as a Column chart type, but when I
change it to an XY (Scatter) chart type, it's the same as the 2003-and-prior
versions. The Residual Plot does appear originally as an XY (Scatter) chart
type.

The Normal Probability Plot has never been implemented properly in any
version of Excel, and it continues to be of no use.

I use the Regression tool extensively when I teach undergraduate, MBA, and
Exec MBA students. I already have some students who have bought a new
computer with Windows Vista and Office 2007. I am hoping that "service
release 1" for Office 2007 appears soon, so I can avoid providing a lot of
additional instructions and problem solving.

I am experiencing the same problem when running regression in excel
2007.

Does anyone know if there is a way to get around this problem?
Is it possible to create a scatter plot & line of best fit graph
manually given the outputs that excel provides after running the
regression?

I am in required to have a scatter plot with a line of best fit as
outputs for the regressions I am running for a school assignment and
prefer not to have to use an earlier version of excel to complete what
I have already started in 2007.

Any input is much appreciated.

Thanks,

Lorne

Lorne -

Here are some workarounds for the Excel 2007 original release Regression
charts.

In the Regression dialog box, check the boxes for Residual Plots and Line
Fit Plots.

After Excel creates the output, click just inside the outer border of a
chart to select it and then drag it to a new location. Then click and drag
one of the eight resizing handles on the outer border of the chart. Any
resizing will redraw the chart correctly.

The Residual Plot chart is an appropriate XY (Scatter) chart type.

The Line Fit Plot is originally created as a Column chart type. To change
it, click just inside its outer border to select the chart. Choose Chart
Tools | Design | Change Chart Type | XY (Scatter) with only Markers | OK.
Click a data point on the chart to select the Predicted Y data series, or
with any chart object selected, choose Chart Tools | Layout or Format. In
the Current Selection area, verify that Series "Predicted Y" is selected
from the drop-down list. Choose Format Selection | Line Color | Automatic |
Close. Optionally, also choose Market Options to use a smaller marker
instead of size 7 or to use None.

Please let me know whether these workarounds are satisfactory for you.
