I am using PPT 2002 (XP) and notice that, after entering
data and formatting charts (bar, line, pies, etc.) and
returning to regular editing mode, the text in the
charts "squishes"--gets wider and flatter. If I ungroup
the chart, the text all returns to normal--but, of course,
I can no longer go in an simply change data in teh charts.
Is this a bug that MS is aware of and is there a fix? I
just spent 45 minutes on their support website looking for
mention of the problem or a solution and found nothing. Is
anyone else having this problem?

Are you re-sizing the chart? If so, do it only when in MS Graph, and try
setting each of your text fields with "Auto Scale" turned OFF or ON,
depending on whether you want the size to change when the chart size is
changed. Also, I don't know if this might have an effect one way or another
in your case, but there is a setting in Tools > Options > Edit that
specifies that New charts take on PowerPoint font.

Also, do you have Service Pack 1 installed (check Help > About)?

Sonia,
Thank you! I am running PPT 2002 with SP-2. As a test, I
just clikced on the "insert chart" button, accepted all
the defaults that came up, and backed out--fonts are
totally trashed. Default for Auto-scale is checked and I
left it that way (sometimes I do, and sometimes I don't--
no effect). The default for new charts taking on PPT font
is checked (have never changed this). Resizing within the
chart template still results in distorted fonts. See why
this has been sofrustrating? Any suggestions?

Chuck, when in PPT, right-click the chart and go to Format > Object.
Then on the size tab, see if you have 100% in both size boxes. If not,
set them to 100% and see if that helps.

Thanks for your help! The suggestion you made for the org
chart question seems to have done the trick. As far as the
squashed text goes, though, I did as you recomended and
checked the 100% boxes--they were both already clicked
off. Text is still distorted.

Well, I'm glad one worked, anyway!

I'm stumped on the chart problem. Sonia's already given you the other
suggestions I would have considered for that. I know I've not seen this
issue, and I'm having a hard time thinking of anything that would cause
it. (Not to say it's not happening, of course!)

Only other thing I can think of is to ungroup a copy of the chart and
see if the text behaves any better.

Oh yes, ungrouping solves everything--but then I can no
longer go in and simply pump numbers into the chart to
edit it. Everything becomes a rectangle rather than a bar
or a line element in the template. So, while this works
when I know I have a truly "final" version, that is not
very often. How does one report such a bug to Microsoft? I
spent hordes of time on their support site looking for a
way to do this, but found nothing.

Tell you what. Why don't you send me a sample chart or two with a
reminder of the issue and the version of PPT you're using. I'd like to
see if the same thing happens on this end, or if we can at least figure
out what's going on with your charts. Please don't post the slides here
-- just email them to (E-Mail Removed)
