characters/letters slow to delete with "backspace" button

's Computer Specifications

I have XP/Office '03.
Until today when hitting the "backspace" button characters/letters would
rapidly delete. Now when hitting the "backspace" button they still delete but
noticeably slower. What happened to cause this change and how can I get
characters/letters to delete at the previous more rapid pace?
