We have an intern who set up a pc to be used in kiosk mode. The user name of
the profle he set it up with started with the character $. It didn't take
long to see that $ wasn't a good choice of characters. The profile never
showed up in the profile list and everytime the machine rebooted, all the
power settings reverted to the default. I have been searching for
information specifically about the use of $ in a username in windows and
can find nothing. Can anyone point me in the right direction or share some
knowledge?

Thanks

Ruthie

According to this article -
http://www.winxpsolution.com/ConfigAcctPolicyXPPro.aspx - the dollar sign is
not an invalid character.
I know that if a share name is followed by the $ sign, it is hidden. And
you're saying the profile doesn't show up in the folder Documents and
Settings? Have you tried changing Explorer's "view" options to show hidden
files and folders?

Yes, the view options are showing all. The user is not visible in the
profile list in Documents and Settings and also not in the User Profiles in
My Computer, System Properties when I am logged in as Administrator.
It appears that the profile is deleted at logoff because a text file I saved
in My Documents while logged in as that user was gone the next time I logged
in.
