In the character map it is possible to search for special characters to
insert in the text. Some of them, eg. '±' are easy to make as you only have
to press ALT+0177, but others do not have an ALT code; only a Unicode. For
example capital Omega in Arial has U+03A9, but how can i make use of this
code?

In recent versions of Word, you can type 03A9, then press Alt+X. But see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/InsertSpecChars.htm for other methods.
