I encountered a problem when navigating a web page with an imported quote
from another web page. In the quote the character code Ëš was used for a
degree symbol. Normally the code is ° or ° This caused an I Explore error
message with an option to ignore or close. Clicking on "Ignore" usually
allows you to bypass the problem, but in this instance forced clicking on
"Close" and caused the internet session to end. Subsequent internet sessions
are slowed down and many web pages can't be opened until my PC is rebooted.

I can't find any reference to a code Ëš and would like to know what it is,
and if the problem caused is temporary or perhaps could cause a permanent
issue in the future. I use Windows98SE with IE6 fully updated.

Any advice would be appreciated?

Sorry, the message translated the code into the symbol!

The first code (which causes the problem) hyphenated is &-#-7-3-0-;
The normal code for a degree symbol hyphenated is &-#-1-7-6-; or &-deg-;

More important is the whether the Encoding of the page is being
recognized and set. E.g. what does View, Encoding show? (Alt-V,d)
E.g. I don't think your problem character is encoded properly to be
seen with Unicode.

Here is a page which shows that character (a diacritical called Ring Above
apparently):

http://www.alanwood.net/unicode/spac...r_letters.html

(Google web search for
"#730" diacritical inurl:unicode
)

Do you have trouble with that page too?

BTW Out of curiosity I am pasting it here (where I am not using Unicode): °
I strongly suspect that when it shows up in a news message it will look
differently from the single character it appears as on that page and also
differently from the two characters which it appears as below and
reproduced here: Ëš
