Changing Video Settings in Registry?

Hi All:

I've got this vexing problem...I have a remote server I'm trying to
manage that's running "headless" in a colo facility. I access the
server through a Terminal Services Client connection.

I have some graphics software running on the server that requires the
server to be set to at least 16-bit color. When I log into the server
under TSClient, it shows only 256 colors (8-bit) in the display
settings.

The server's got a RAGEXL chipset with the drivers installed. I don't
know much about what happens when you boot a computer without a
monitor attached, but it seems to only want to boot in 8-bit color.

Perhaps it's impossible, but I've been trying to find out if I can set
the registry so that the machine boots in 16-bit video or higher. I
see that there's a registry key here:

System\CurrentControlSet\HardwareProfiles\Current\
System\CurrentControlSet\Services\ATIxxx\Device0

called DefaultSettings.BitsPerPel

....but it's set to a HEX value of 20, which would correspond to 32
bits/pixel I think?

So is it possible that the video defaults to 8-bit when there's no
monitor attached? Or is there another setting somewhere that can
"force" the server into a higher pixel depth?

TIA, Zippy
