Changing the start page

The default start page in the MS antispyware is the msn site. When I change
it to my normal start page, i get a warning everytime that I have changed my
start page and do I want to allow it. When I go into ms antispyware and
change it there, it continues to put it back to msn's start page. I am
running win xp sp2 and this is a restricted account so I am wondering if it
is ms antispyware that is blocking the change or the fact that it is a
restricted account. Can anyone give me an answer on this one?

The restricted account is the issue.

Log in as an administrator, and use the tools, advanced tools, browser
hijack settings to put in your desired home page and search settings. The
defaults are not chosen by Microsoft Antispyware, per se--but are the
defaults for Windows as installed--on an OEM machine, for example, these may
be an OEM home page.

There's a wizard which should appear early in the use of Microsoft
Antispyware to allow you to change these settings.

Even after you have made this change, running as a limited user may still
result in unexpected messages from Microsoft Antispyware, and inability to
perform some functions, perhaps definition updates.

This should change, or at least be clearly documented, with beta2, before
the end of this year.

Bill,
That seems to work, thank you. But when you go into MSAS, click on advanced
tools, click on system explorers, IE settings, highlight the start page and
click on save these settings as the default, it doesn't show up that it saved
them. Then if you log off the machine and log back in, it shows up with the
setting as I saved them. So there is a glich in how it displays the saving
of default settings. Just curious, when you have set up an XP machine to show
the various users on the log in page and have quick user switching on, how do
you log into the administrator account and what is the default password? (You
had asked me to do this earlier and I just logged in as me since I am set up
as an administrator and temproraly changed the status of the accounts that
were having the pop out issue to full instead of restricted)

Great. I believe that I've seen the lack of visual feedback that the change
has been accepted remarked on before. That's another thing that I believe
will be fixed in beta2, but I don't know for certain.

Am I correct in thinking that you are talking about XP Home? XP Home has a
slightly modified security model which makes it a little different from XP
Professional with regard to the Administrator account. By default, the first
account created as the OS is installed (which is usually done by the OEM or
vendor)--is Administrator, and the password is left null---no password.

So why is this secure? The Administrator account can only be accessed in
Safe mode--and--an account with no password cannot by default access things
across a network.

So the short answer is if you are on XP Home, and need THE administrator
account, you must restart in safe mode. So my advice was probably poorly
worded. There are some differences in functionality between the condition of
being logged in with THE administrator account, and "an" administrator. I
can't list them all, though--there's a difference in the ability to use
certain networking features--raw sockets--and a difference in the ability to
set permissions on objects in the filesystem.

If you are not on XP Home, I'm not sure if the administrator account is
listed if there is only one named account on the machine, and that is an
administrator. If this is the case, you hit CTRL ALT Delete on the login
screen, and I think you then get a box to enter a name directly (i.e.
administrator.)
