my comp has a message that keeps flashing on the bottom tool tray and says
that my comp is infected with virus activity and i need a certain program to
get rid of it. when i try to click on the message it gives me a download page
for spywarequake, but when i try to download the program, it says my security
settings on my comp wont allow me to download it. how do i change my security
to allow the download, and will installing this program remove the virus and
the message? thanks, julie.

that message is spyware..don't install it. If you have other programs, run
them. Maybe you'd best get an online scan from Edwido, or TrendMicro. You
can Google them, they both have fess scan offers.

when i open my internet browser page i keep getting a security notice coming
up immediately, and then my home page changes from yahoo.co. to aboutblank
and wont let me keep it as yahoo. i keep changing my internet options back to
yahoo.com but it just changes straight back as soon as i open the browser
back up. i have to go to my yahoo mail desktop shortcut to get on the
internet successfully. thanks.

Julie, it sounds like you may have a spyware/virus problem. If you have an
antivirus application installed, be sure it is up to date and run a scan (you
may want to try running a scan in safe mode). If your antivirus app does not
scan for adaware, then download one of the many free programs available; MS's
Windows Defender is free
(http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...e/default.mspx) and
AdAware and Spybot work well also.

Do *not* allow the download. Spyware Quake should *not* be installed; it is
a poor and dangerous product, and it itself could be considered malware. Its
warning you about a so-called virus is nothing mre than blatant false
advertising. See http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

The reason you get such messages is that you are running without a firewall.
That makes you vulnerable to all sorts of malware, and a message like this
is the least of your worries. You need to install a firewall ASAP--either
the built-in Windows firewall, or better, a free third-part choice like
ZoneAlarm.
