I recently added a second monitor to my IBM ThinkPad T42 laptop (Windows XP,
SP2). I am able to extend my screen to the 2nd monitor and show the same
display on both monitors, however I am NOT able to make the second monitor
into my Primary. Is there any way to do this without purchasing additional
software (i.e. UltraMon)?

I looked in Display Settings and Device Manager. Could not find a way.
But... in my video card configuration program there is a way to set the
default to another monitor.
Maybe your's has the same.

Thanks for the advice, however I don't know how to access my "video card
configuration program", can you help with that as well?

Try Desktop Properties (Right click empty space on desktop. Select properties
in dropdown menu.)
Click on "Settings" tab. Click "Advance" Button at bottom. There should be
a tab with the Video Card name on it. Click on that if present and look for
an option to change default monitor.
Other then that you would need the video card CD and do an "Explore CD" to
see if there is a Management program available for it.
