changing percentage of prices

I have exported data of my normal prices on my merchandise. I would like to
change all prices in a column by 20% (or a different percentage another
time). The only thing I have found is that you are (supposedly) able to
highlight the cell with the data in it and drag the handle to apply the
formula to other cells. The only thing that I can get to happen is to change
the following cells to whatever the cell that has the formula applied to it.

For example:

A1 - $ 34.99
A2 - 20.00
A3 - 24.99
etc....

I want to change all prices to 20% of the value that is currently in the
column. Does this make sense (I hope).

Any suggestions...

Thanks

you place a value or a % in a cell and copy, then paste special into
range of values and multiply the original values by the copied value o

Your post is a little bit confusing ... Initially, you wrote that yo
wanted to "change all prices in a column _*BY_20%*_ ... " and later on
you wrote that you "want to change all prices *_TO_20%_* of the valu
that is currently in the column."

In math, there is a big difference in CHANGING BY 20% and CHANGING T
20%.

Anyway, here is how you change values of a column using a constant:

1. In an empty cell that is currently not being used, enter you desire
percentage;
2. Copy this cell (Ctrl C);
3. Highlight the range of numbers in your column;
4. Go to Edit/PasteSpecial/Multiply

Shawn,

To permanently change the values, put the change value, (e.g.: 1.2 for 20%
increase, 1.1 for 10% etc.) in a cell, and Copy. Now select the cells to be
changed, Edit - Paste special - Multiply.

Perfect... Now was that so hard for *&%^$ Microsoft to explain? Maybe I am
just stupid and could not type in the right search words.

Thanks Again, that saves me from having to re-type 4700 different prices.

&*^%$#%^ Microsoft Help cannot possibly anticipate all permutations of
questions that could arise.

The method used to change all cells by a certain percentage seems intuitive to
me, assuming one has investigated the possibilities and options in Paste
Special. Add, subtract, multiply, Transpose, Paste Link, etc.

Learn how to use the in-built options and functions of Excel and it will
become apparent which to use when a situation arises.

For starters, go to Tools>Customize>Commands and scroll through the menu
options there. Right-click on each one and see "Description".

A plethora of Excel built-in options awaits.

I don't imagine you're stupid....you found your way to this NG to ask for
help.
