I would like to use animated letters in place of the current page banners,
but when I change one page, it changes all the page banners to the same
thing. How do I override this?

Turn off, or make sure the banner is not within the shared borders of your
page;

Shared borders cause all content within them to be shown on every page where
the border is active.

Format->Shared Borders
Select All pages
Clear all check boxes

This will turn off all shared borders.
To turn off just one border, simply clear that check box, leave the
rest.
