Changing notebook/laptop mobile/wired configurations

I use a new notebook computer wired to twisted pair Ethernet in my office.
The machine is a member of our domain. Performance is good.

I sometimes try to change to a wireless configuration to use in our
conference room. The wireless network is outside of our firewall and I use
the VPN to connect to the domain.

I sometimes take the notebook home where I also have a wireless network and
connect with VPN. There (or on travel) I don't want to join the domain.

On wireless I frequently experience slow bootup and/or slow logon. The
machine is "obviously" trying some network connections and timing out on
them. It is very frustrating when I know that performance should be good.

Is there a document that describes optimum configurations for mobile and
wired scenarios of the same computer?
