The procedure that's outlined in the link provided by Leonard Grey is the
accepted route to solve this problem. As you may have already found out,
changing the user name in Control Panel -> User Accounts is really only a
cosmetic solution. Creating a new user account with the correct name and
copying your old files to the new profile is the way to go. Here's an

You will have to use a third account which is a computer administrator in
order to copy the files. You can use the built-in Administrator account or,
if you're running XP Home, create a temporary admin account that can be
deleted once the procedure is completed.
