Not a big problem.
This window pops up and tell you about changing file extension.
The reason is simple, you change the name of the file but you don't include
the extension, so you get this warning. When you change the name of the
file, add the extension .jpg
So, when you rename make sure you include the file extension .jpg after the
name.
Here is a much more extensive renaming for you, Have fun with it.

Whenever I have downloaded my photos to my pictures, I like to change the
name to what the photo is all about. Up until recently I could change names,
but now it is popping up with this message:
'If you change file extension file may become unusable'.
I did a test run on an old photo and it definitely becomes unusable. Could
you possibly tell me what I need to do to correct this.
I have XP Home and Minolta DiMage Z1 camera
Thanks so much.

I may not have stated what I meant thoroughly. Whenever I open up the folder
which will give you DCIM, click on it and then you will see another folder
100MLT29, which I also click on to have the pictures appear. Each will be
showing PICT0001.JPG. That is when I go to remane each one, but the notice
pops up about the file extension being changes.
I sure could use some help on this and I thank you in advance.

Yves,
Thank you so much for the help. I feel like a real idiot as I now remember
that I use to have to add the JPG. when changing a name.
I have pulled up your site and am going to put it in my favorites. One
question if you don't mind. Picasa or IrfanView. I used Picasa a few years
back but changed over to IrfanView and have used it since. Are the two
programs equal in what they offer and do?
Again, thanks muchly for your help.

Picasa is nice because it automatically opens all your pictures and you can
easily view them in chronological order and easy to use to exchange pictures
with friends
Irfanview is a long time favorite and very good for batch processing like
changing file names, file conversion etc.
If you print a lot and you need to crop for a particular print size, the
software I prefer is:
www.faststone.org
also free and I think the fastest way to crop pictures for a particular
print size.

Thank you Yves. I will go into Fastone today as I have quite a few photos
that I need to crop and print up for my family.
I sure do appreciate your help, advice and suggestions.
Have a great day.

I routinely change file names without having to add an extension like .jpg.
I think I am able to do this because I have chosen to "Hide extensions for
known file types" in Control Panel/Folder Options/View. I often change the
names, so I would find having to remember to add the extension to be a
bother. Perhaps this would work for the original poster also.
