changing the name on a computer

I am trying to change the name on my computer: All I can do is change the
computer's name (on, for example, a network) from 'CompaqPres1200' to
'livingroomcomputer' by using the change computer name utility at Kelly's
Corner

So every time I try to install some new program which requires me to enter
personal information, I have to manually change 'Valued Sony Customer' to my
name. It isn't so bad at log on but it is a pain to change personal
information all the time. I once found a program which does this but can't
see it anywhere now. I thought TweakUI did this but it doesn't seem to?

I may be wrong but it sounds like you are
confusing computer name and user name.
They are two different entities.
Computer Name can be changed in the
Computer Name tab of System Properties.
(Start > Run > sysdm.cpl)
User Name can be changed or a new User
added in User Accounts Properties.
(Start > Run > nusrmgr.cpl)
-------------------------------------------

You might want to take a look at this article:

How to Change Name and Company Information After You Install
Windows XP

For an automated solution, go to this web site and click on
"Change Registered Owner". It's the fifth item down in the
right hand column.
