I have recently built a new PC and installed Vista Ultimate (non OEM). I
think my motherboard is faulty and I need to get a replacement. Hearing all
the stories about Vista's activities to prevent software piracy, will this
have any consequences. Can I do it and if so, will it reduce my future
options to make hardware changes. One of the reasons for building my own PC
was to allow me to easily make hardware changes?

Just call Microsoft and reactivate. They will give you a new set of numbers.

No, there will not be any problems.
Worst case is you will need to call Microsoft to activate, typically
about a 5 minute call.

You can move to another computer or reinstall retail Windows Vista an
unlimited number of times as long as it is only installed on one
computer at a time.
