I lived in Arizona and bought my laptop there. I am now back in Englan
and have more use for the symbol '£' but it is not on the keyboard an
I have to cut and paste it from the character map. How do I deselect
symbol I don't use and select the '£' symbol to take its place on th
keyboard

Change your locale and keyboard settings in the Control Panel applet for
Regional Settings.

This doesn't work as it's an American keyboard layout that has no
picture for £. If it was an English keyboard everything would be fine
but it isn't and it'll be chaotic to change every single key by messing
in regional settings just so that the <shift 2> displays £, if it even
would be that key, I can't remember.
All I want to do is make it so a key of my choosing will display '£' on
the screen, I have the key in mind that I'll use and all I want to know
is how do I achieve this.

After using Google for less than a minute I found
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device...kscan-map.mspx
that may get you started on what you want to do. Further searching may
find the key code you will need for the £ symbol.

That code works for getting the symbol from the keyboard but the link I
referenced has you entering hex codes for the key you are mapping and
what you want to replace it. Not sure if they are the same.
