Changing File Types

Hi, I think I've messed up rather badly. In an attempt to fix an error
message I get when trying to open a file online "this file does not have a
program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association
in the folder options control panel" I went into File Types thinking that by
changing the settings there, I'd be able to open the file. This has proven to
be a very bad decision. I added a new option "open" to the file folder, then
chose Microsoft Works as the program to do the opening. Now every time I go
to open any folder, it takes me here. I figured I could just delete this
option by highlighting open and clicking edit, it won't let me do this
either. Now it either brings me right into Microsoft Works, or the Search
option whenever I try to open any folders. Is there some way I can simply
restore this back to the factory settings? I've already tried System restore,
twice, also 'Reset all folders' under view in folder options, as well as
'restore defaults' in general under folder options. Please, please, please,
any suggestions?

I'm passing this along since you mentioned that you're
launching Search when you try to open folders.

Search Companion Starts If You Double-Click a Folder or Drive

Here's another reference to that problem.

Windows launches Search Companion window when opening any
folder

If you choose to try the registry editing procedure, do
yourself a favor, follow the directions exactly as their
written. Post back if you're not sure what to do. Poking around
aimlessly got you into your current predicament.

Also, when you get this folder issue resolved, post a new
question about the file you couldn't open. Include the file
format, the .xxx portion of the file name, in your question.
Odds are someone will be able to tell you how to open that
file.

Good luck

Wow. That was far easier than I'd imagined, thank you so much. I'll heed your
advice and not 'poke around aimlessly' lol. Thanks again. -Sarah
