Changing drive letters after HD upgrade

I replaced my 20G HD that had 4 partitions (C,D,E&F) with
a larger HD by configuring the new HD as Slave,
partitioning it into 4 partitions (I,J,K&L) and copying
all partions from the old to the new using Drive Image 5.0.
I then refigured the new HD as Master and permanently
removed the old HD. In order to boot from the new HD I
had to reinstall XP. When XP rebooted, many of my
programs did not work because the dirve letters were still
I,J,K&L although there was no C,D,E or F. Using Disk
Manager I changed J,K&L to D,E&F but am not able to change
I to C because it is the system drive. How can I change
my system drive to C? Why didn't XP reassign the new HD
partitions to C,D,E&F after I removed the old HD?
