changing double quotes to open/close double quotes

I need to replace a double quote character in parts of my 500 page document.
I made the mistake of telling the find/replace command to replace all. My
problem is I have code snippets that are in one font (mono spaced) and specs
that are in other (TNR) and I need the double quote character in the code
snippets and the open/close in the spec sections. I need to replace the
open/close double quotes in the snippets back to the regular double quote
character. So, I did a test find/replace on the spec sections and there
over 10,000 double quote characters (including open/close double quotes as
well as regular double quotes). The same for code snippets. Is there a way
to force the find/replace function to replace any double quote with a
regular double quote? And is there a way to have the find function look for
regular double quotes? It seems that Word makes no distinction between
open/close double quotes and regular double quotes.

TIA,
Ken Erickson

Hi Ken

You can use the Format menu in the Find and Replace dialog (you need to use
More to see it) to impose a font condition on the search. You may find you
also need to change the AutoFormat entry that replaces straight quotes with
curly ones before doing the find and replace for monospace font ".

Ken,

First let me say that I am not sure I know the diffence
between an open/close double quote and a double quote.
However, if you are trying to change "smart quotes" in one
font to straight quotes while ignoring the "smart quotes"
in the another font, maybe I can help.

Assuming every double quote in your document now is
a "smart qoute" perform the following:

Tools>AutoCorrect Options>AutoFormat As You Type.
Uncheck "Straigt Quotes" to "Smart Quotes"

Edit>Replace. Type " in the find what field.
Select the "More" button Format>Font
Apply the Mono Spaced font
Type " in the replace with field
Replace all.

This should find only the smart quotes formatted with the
mono spaced font and replace them with straight qoutes.

I say should because I don't have a font name "mono
spaced" to test with.

Graham,

Thanks, your suggestion worked the best. Where do I find more info on the
[^0147] stuff? I looked in the symbol table and find it very diffifcult to
find the open/close double quote.

I know about the formatting option at the bottom of the find/replace
dialog - there are so many options/setups in word - enough to give a cow
heartburn that it some times becomes a hindrance to work with. As someone
once said: sometimes having too much can be a bad thing!

Thanks,
Ken Erickson

Use the Insert Symbol dialog with Times New Roman font where these
characters are well defined - the characters in question are in the Latin
Extended Additional region - and checkout the ALT key combination = ALT0147
