I want to compare a file I’m about to download with another file that I
already have downloaded. How can I change my default view settings in the
Save dialog window from List to Details so I can compare the size of the
file, date, etc.

Just click on the tiny box in the top right-hand corner, the words 'View
Menu' will appear when you hover your mouse over it.

Click on that and choose 'Details'
..

Jim,

You aren't going to get the byte information, digital signature, version
before it's downloaded. Of course, if you're a programmer like me you can
ger correct file sizes, but you aren't getting the file version... without
it downloaded

It doesn't - as you told the OP - you need to download the file before
getting it's 'details'.

But, the question was - "How can I change my default view settings in
the
Save dialog window from List to Details .... ?" (quote - unquote...)

.....so I answered it!

Maybe I wasn't aiming high enough?

Free Download Manager has a query file size button, so you can check the
file size before downloading it.

On the SaveAs dialog toolbar, click "View Menu" button, click Details
or right click in main window, click View, click Details
Columns on mine are: Name, Size, Type, Date Modified

Without mouse, using keyboard, when the dialog first appears:
Shift+Tab, ContextMenuKey, V, D
(And then Tab to switch back to File Name entry box.

ContextMenuKey is between right Win-key and right-Ctrl key
If you do not have a ContextMenuKey (aka. Shortcut Menu)
Shift+Tab, Shift+F10, V, D

(Triple-Click here, to leap like a Deer! --Richard
