During install when the name of the person is entered as user of the
computer is it possible to rename the computer with out a format and
reinstall? The only thing on the xp pro machine now is the os. So if I need
to do it now it would be a good time. Someone else installed the os I don't
know why they used their name.

Thank you Sammy

Click Start / Help, then look for help on "computer name".
There is a whole section dedicated to renaming a computer.

You can change the computer name at any time. Control Panel > System >
Computer Name tab > Change.

Open the run command by clicking Start >> Run and type in:
regedit.exe click [OK] or Hit Enter on your Keyboard.
On the Registry Editor locate the Key Mentioned like this:
[-] HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current
Version\RegisteredOwner = and change the Name to what you have in Mind

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\RegisteredOrganization = change to whatever name you want
like workgroup for ex.
then after finish close the Registry and Reboot the machine.
Also by Right click My Computer and select properties then click Computer
name Tab.

Or
Change the Computer's Registered Owner in Windows XP

line 109 and 131 (right hand side):

You can't go wrong with the following:

Your name: Your Name Here
Your company: Your Company Name Here
