changing brightness/contrast

I know that to change the brightness/contrast of a video I need to configure the capture device settings before I capture the video. The help file says that the first screen that should appear when I go to the video capture wizard is a list of devices and from here I can configure my camera to change the brightness and contrast settings. However, it detects my camera automatically and when I go to the video capture wizard it skips over the first dialog box where I can configure the capture device and goes straight to the place where I choose a location and file name! How do I get to these settings?? I have a Sony DV Camcorder.
