Changed to Workgroup, Now cannot log on

I was trying to transfer files between two XP machines on
my home network. I could search and find each computer but
could not log onto shared resources.

Computer 1. My Business Laptop running XP Professional.
Was set for Domain: "work.net".

Computer 2. Home desktop running XP Home. Was set for
Workgroup: "MSHOME"

I thought that if I changed Computer 1 from Domain to
Workgroup: MSHOME, I might be able to log onto the shared
resources of Computer 2.

Bad move. Upon changing Computer 1 to Workgroup: MSHOME,
it asked me for authorization. I put my normal name and
password (It is an administrator account). It then asked
me to reboot. After reboot, it asked me for name and
password but I get the logon message "The system could not
log you on. Make sure your User name and Domain are
correct, then type your password again. Letters in
passwords must be typed using the correct case."

I seem to have no other logon options. How can I go back
to Domain: work.net now that I can't even log on? I'm
going to post this in Networking and Accessibility.
Thanks for your help in advance!
Dave

Take your computer back to work and ask the admin to rejoin the computer to
the domain. You didn't need to do this, btw....you can access workgroup
resources from your domain PC very easily if you provide the workgroup PC
credentials when you map drives, etc....

Thanks, I have no problems accessing workgroup resources
on WIN2K machines from an XP machine but I have never been
able to use a WIN2K machine to access an XP machine. I
search for the XP computer and it shows up fine. When I
double click on the icon I get the nameassword prompt
and I enter this. It doesn't accept. Strangely, it puts
the workgroup name in front of the user
name "WORKGROUP\USERNAME" but even if I change this to
different combinations, it won't accept.
BTW, is there any way to recover my laptop before going
back to work? I'm short on political capital at the
moment.
How will they get a non-existing workgroup to allow my
logon now that I no longer have the Domain set up?
Thanks,
Dave

Thanks for the post/thread...how ironic..I did the EXACT
same thing today, and also will depend on our IT person
to reconnect me to the domain, hopefully without doing
anything else to the (tablet)PC. Certainly do not want to
have to reinstall windows!

Thanks again,

Good luck TJ, I'll let you know how mine turns out.
Please do the same for me just in case my IT person claims
they need to wipe my hard drive.

We were able to get me back on by using another
administators account, then making changes...

TJ, thanks for responding. My dilema ended similarly. I
was able to log onto the laptop because the IT girl
remembered the Administrator password. Then, we changed
from Workgroup to Domain. It required a network
administrator Name:Password to join. All is well now.
They tell me that if the laptop Administrator password was
unknown there would have been no way to salvage the data
on the disk.
