I restarted my computer today and my desktop came up with only half of my
usual icons. I could not access my documents and the settings for internet
explorer and outlook were gone. It was almost as though I signed into a
different user profile. Although this computer does not have and never has
had more than one user account. In seaching, I found under Documents and
Settings the administrator folder, the all users folder, downloads, owner,
and owner.50029860439. The owner folder has my correct files, settings etc.
but the computer only starts up using the owner.50029860439. How do I get
back to using the correct documents and settings folder and what happened to
cause this in the first place?

I tried to restore to three dates prior to the problem and each time the
computer response was that it could not restore to that date, pick another.
Could you tell me how to get the correct "owner" folder to work with my user
account?

Hello,

It looks like your original "owner" profile has been damaged.

You can fix the problem by creating a new account in User Accounts and
transferring the files from your old account to this new account.

After creating a new user from Start > Control Panel > User Accounts, follow
this guide to transfer the settings to the new account
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151

Once done, login to your new account and check if everything works out
normal. You may then delete the old account (using User Accounts) to free up
space, or leave it as it is.

Thank you for your help. All went well until I attempted to paste to the new
user profile and was given the error message: Cannot copy file: Cannot read
from the source file or disk. Do you have any help as to where to go from
here?

Hello,

I would strongly suggest having a backup of your important files before
proceeding as there is a possibility this may cause more problems.

After making a backup..

Start > Run > CHKDSK /F > OK > Y > ENTER > Restart system

... to perform a check on your hard disk
