is there a way to change where Word stores custom style sets from the
default folder of QuickStyles?

I don't believe so. There doesn't appear to be an option to change the
location anywhere in Word Options (Save or Advanced [Save or General, File
Locations])

For your reference, in XP, potentially critical *user-defined* files, which
you might want to back up on a regular basis, are stored in the following
locations (C: for illustrative purposes only) on a standalone computer:

Templates
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name \Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates\*.dotx or *.dotm

Building Blocks
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name \Application Data\Microsoft\Document
Building Blocks\1033\Building Blocks.dotx
Also can be stored in a document template or global template

Document Themes;Theme Fonts; Theme Effects; Theme Colors
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates\Document Themes\*.thmx…\Theme Fonts\*.xml, …\Theme
Effects\*.xml, ...\Theme Colors\*.xml for customized fonts, effects and colors
Active document theme is specified in the parent document template when the
document is created

Quick Style Sets
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Quick
Styles\*.dotx (if modified and saved with same name as built-in Quick Style
set, will also be saved here)
Active Quick Style set is specified in the parent document template when the
document is created

Charts
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates\Charts\*.crtx

Quick Access Toolbar:
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\OFFICE\Word.qat
Also may be saved in a document template or document but cannot be displayed
from a global template loaded other than the Normal template

Macros and keyboard shortcuts
Document or template

AutoCorrect Entries[unformatted]:
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\*.acl

AutoCorrect Entries [formatted]:
Formatted entries are stored in the Normal template

Bibliography master source list
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Bibliography\

Dictionary
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\
Microsoft\Uproof\Custom.dic (exclusions also saved here)

List Gallery
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\ListGal.dat

I'm sure there are others but I haven't found them yet. In Vista, just
replace Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\ with
Users\username\appdata\roaming (local instead of roaming for word.qat file)
