I want to change the share-name of a folder on local machine.
I brought up Windows Explorer and right clicked on the folder - then
selected 'Sharing and Security'. I try to change the share name in
the resulting window, but it won't let me.

Why not?

I tried the same thing with a folder that as of now had not yet been
set up as shared and lacked a share name, and it lets me enter a name
just fine - so something is different in the first case.

What am I doing wrong?

Unshare it, then share it again under the new name.
