Hello!

On my Dell Precision M60 laptop and on a friend's Fujitsu Lifebook P-1610
Tablet PC, both running XP Pro, whenever the resolution is changed from the
native resolution to something less, it creates a black border all the way
around the new desktop instead of taking the whole screen space as an analog
monitor would do.

Is there a way to have lower than native resolution and still use the whole
screen size?

Mine doesn't do that. It must be a function of your video driver.
What is the make and model of your video card.

That said, LCD monitors operate best and produce the clearest and
sharpest image when operated at their native resolution. If that is
too high a resolution you should try configuring it to use the "large
fonts" option (Control Panel - Display - Settings - Advanced) which
may suffice for your needs.

Yes, there are some controls for size, but I do not think that is the issue.

I have two LCD monitors at home on different video cards (NVIDIA and ATI),
and I can change the screen resolution from its native format. The icons and
other stuff get bigger and not as sharp, but it still uses the whole size of
the screen for the desktop.

When I do the same thing on the laptop, the icons and text stay the same
size, but the viewable desktop just keeps getting smaller and smaller as I
go from 1680 x 1050 to 1280 x 1024 down to 800 x 600. By the time I hit 800
x 600, the laptop shows the desktop in about a 6" x 5" rectangle. I have a
15.4" wide display on the laptop.

I would expect the desktop itself to remain at the full physical size of the
screen but have the icons get bigger as an analog monitor would do or as my
desktop LCDs do.

My laptop has an NVIDIA Quadro FX Go700. The Tablet PC I mentioned is a
Fujitsu P-1610.

Hi Gregg,

As Ron Martell stated prior, this is a function of the video card/driver.
Make sure you have the latest driver for your video card from the
manufacturers web site.

I can make my ~1300x900 sreen show as a postage stamp by decreasing
width & height.

Did u try DPI setting?
