Change to "read only" after document is open

(In Word 2003)

Word permits Open Read-Only at the time a document is opened. But sometimes
I open a document and then only later realize that I want to avoid saving it.

Is there any way to change to "read only" after opening a document, as if it
was opened read-only in the first place?

Thanks.

Thanks. Good idea.

There have been too many times that I've been working on multiple versions
of the same file, and I've inadvertently overwritten the original rather than
the new version.
