When my friend installed XP Home, she put in a name and then the
25-number code, and then activated it. Now she wants to change the
name from "Joe Schmoe" to "John Doe".

How to do that?

Hi,

To change your sign-in name, go to control panel and open up the User Accounts applet and select the
account whose name you want to change and then click on 'Change my name'.

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

In the right pane, double click RegisteredOwner and change the Value data.

Or you can use this automated script:

Change Registered Owner and Organization (Line 7)

Change Computer Name (Line 109)

Change My Computer Name to User Name (Line 131)
