How to change font in inline reply comments?

When selecting "Mark My Comments" in Email Options I find only my name (in
brackets) appears in bold italics. The actual text I enter appears as
standard (plain) text. This is not what I've seen from others, nor per the
MS Office Online URL:

How can I make the font of my actual comments be bold italic?

Using Outlook 2003 SP2, XP Pro V2002 SP2
