I am using Windows XP with Service Pack 2. Have just installed a new
250 gig Hitachi U/sw hard drive as drive zero (master drive)
and have retained the original 30 gig Western Digital drive as drive
one (slave drive) .

Have used Norton Ghost to clone complete contents of the old drive onto
the new drive.

The computer is now booting up on the new hard drive, but the drive
letters of the new hard drive are now designated as letters M through U
while the original letters of the original partitioned hard drive
remain C through K.

Is it possible to change the drive letters of both drives so that the
new master drive letters start with C through K?


I have Norton Ghost as well as Partition Magic 8.

Hi A. When you cloned your drive. you should have disconnected all other
drives and booted on your new drive as Primary master. It would have been
seen as C:,D:, etc. This is assuming your original drive was C:. You would
then add any further drives. I don`t think you can reassign the boot drive
letter on the OS drive.

other drive is disconnected. Were you referring to non hard drives

Is English a second language for you? He clearly meant *after* you
clone the drive.

You do not want the signatures of the other drive to compete with the
new boot disk. Even then there may be a conflict when you reintroduce
the old drive after establishing the new drive as the boot device, in
which case you are going to have to learn how to read English or you
will never figure out what to do.

You have your original drive in your computer, as Master.
You plug your new drive to it as Slave.
You clone Master to Slave. Now you have 2 identical `drives`.
Switch off the computer and substitute the New drive for the old. making
sure it is set as Master.
If you want to reconnect your original drive to the system, you Must make it
a Slave, and only add it after you`ve booted with your new drive to ensure
it`s working OK.
