I have a situation in which I have a doamin xyz with two
dc's. One has all the roles. I need to break the
connection between the servers and take the one that has
none of the roles and put it into its own doamin.

Whats i the best method for doing this? Obviously I
coudl just rebuild it from scratch but I am looking for a
solution that will take the least amount of time. Can I
use the dcpromo command? If so how does it work, what is
the outcome once I do that, what are the down sides?
Where can I find information that command.

Any other solutions that maybe helpful?

Thanks

..

Run dcpromo on the server you want to remove from the existing domain. This
will make it a member server. You can then remove it from the domain just as
you would remove a desktop from the domain. I would check and reset the
local admin login and password before removing it from the domain. Once
removed from the domain you can then run dcpromo again and put it in it's
own domain.

For more info go to www.microsoft.com and search the knowledgebase for
dcpromo.

This is a PITA demoting DC and immediately revealing the fact nobody
knows/remembers/has documented the local Admin old password which had been
set a long long time ago. But special tools make the life easier...
