Open a command prompt and run:
attrib +s +h "%userprofile%\desktop\desktop.ini"

This will not work if "Hide protected system files" is unchecked in Folder options.

Good Luck, Ayush.

Hi,

I have searched the forums at length for an answer the this very
specific question, and am unable to find the exact answer.

How do I change the icon for "Desktop" in the My Places bar (in the
Open/Save As Dialog Box, Firefox, and Explorer) AND in the Drop-down
menu above every Explorer window?

I have used TweakUI to change the Places listed in said bar, for which
I already had icons customized the normal way, via Customize Desktop
in the Display Properties. Obviously, that won't work for the Desktop
icon.

I changed the actual icon for the Desktop by browsing the Documents
and Settings folder in Explorer, and going to the Folder Options for
the "desktop" directory itself. This did succeed in changing the icon
as displayed in Explorer and the drop-down menu. However, the icon in
My Places remained unchanged and now I have a desktop.ini file sitting
there [on my desktop]. I am not content to turning off hidden files
just to make that one file invisible.

Then, to change the icon in My Places, I edited the entry "Place0" in
key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
\Policies\comdlg32\PlacesBar" to a String Value instead of DWORD
value, allowing me to enter the full path for Desktop, instead of the
hex value originally used. This succeeded in getting the result I want
in My Places, but I am of course still stuck with the 'desktop.ini'
file showing.

So it boils down to... how can I achieve the same effects without the
ini file or turning off hidden files?

Ayush,

I did as you suggested. I didn't see that it did anything, the file
still exists, and of course I still have to have hidden and system
files off.

Where is the desktop.ini file ?

Try this :
Open command prompt and type:
attrib +s +h
then drag the Desktop.ini file on the command prompt window.
Press Enter

Good Luck, Ayush.

Ayush,

I did that, which is the same thing as your first suggestion, and
nothing seemed to happen. The file, though it is hidden, still exists.
