Upgrades are nearly always a bad idea. Specially when the procedure to
perform an upgrade is not followed. I can understand a new deployment of a
few thousand upgrades in a corporate environment but for a single user, an
upgrade usually carries over any problems the original OS had.
A clean install without a thorough compatibility check is also a bad idea.
This is true for both hardware compatibility and software compatibility. The
point is that an upgrade ultimate leads to "undefined behaviour" in that
1000 upgrades will result in 1000 different installation results based on
how the original OS was configured, whether it was healthy and whether the
appropriate procedure was followed.
Since your system had Win98, the hardware compatibility list (HCL) can help
determine what, if any drivers should be acquired. Running "winnt32
/checkupgradeonly" will explain some of the issues (and issues there will
be - that's a 100% certainty). Without mentioning bios compatibility and
upgrading your bios.
Certainly i can say something like change your fonts in display properties
or rename the files/folders but essentially that won't fix your problems.
