Hello,

I may have bought the wrong type of thin client... How to do I change
anything in XP Embedded (SP2)? I bought a compaq thin client recently and I
can't anything. It boots to it's own little desktop with an RDP connection
icon, but if I set up a connection to our terminal server and save it, the
connection is erased the next time I turn off/on the client. The connection
worked, but the saved settings are gone. I can't access Add/Remove programs,
Users, or most other things in the control panel of the XP Embedded client..

Microsoft's XP Embedded website refers to XP Embedded Studio with Target
Analyser, System Designer, and other tools to modify the XP image, but makes
no mention of how to actually find Studio. Is it in the XP Embedded OS
already, do you have to buy it???

Thanks,

You'd have to talk to Compaq if you want changes made to that image. XP
Embedded images are typically made specific to a hardware platform and are
"locked down" with respect to what features they expose.

If you wanted to create your own thin client, you could purchase the
toolkit, build your own OS image and then buy run-time licenses as you
produce copies. There are contracts to sign with MS that any of the
distributors (such as Avnet) could help you with.

So... if all I really want this thing to do is connect via RDP to a Terminal
Server, how do I at least get the connection specfics (server IP, user name,
password, domain) to save, and how do I get a shortcut placed in the Startup
folder seeing as there doesn't seem to be a way to access "My Computer" or
any form of Windows Explorer. I just want this thing to turn on and
automatically initiate the RDP connection. The actual RDP connection itself
is already set up and usable. I can connect to the terminal server using my
settings, but they just don't save.

This is total guesswork on my part not knowing the specific device, but I'm
assuming since your changes weren't saved that they based their image on
"EWF". That's a technology which allows an OEM to filter writes and thus
potentially prevent them from ever hitting disk. It's a feature that allows
the OEM to make sure their device is clean at every reboot. If this is the
case, you won't be able to make those changes unless the OEM specifically
added the capability for you to persist your changes.

This is a real stab in the dark but *if* you can get a command
prompt running try typing

EWFMGR C: -COMMIT

after making your changes and just before rebooting.
