Is there a way to permanently change the action of clicking a "reg" file
from executing it to opening it in Notepad?

I don't think I'd mess up your registry, trying to find a way to permanently
circumvent the 'merge' functionality in the right click submenu.

Just right click on your file and select Edit. By default *.reg files open
in Notepad.

Open Folder Options, File Types tab.

Scroll down and select "REG".

Click "Advanced" button, click "Edit" to highlight, click "Set Default"
button.

When I click your link the loaded document says to load "Control Panel" then
click "Appearance and Themes". There is no "Appearance and Themes" icon in
my Control Panel!

Don -- its nothing personal... but ... do your parents know why your
online?? You can access Folder options - by opening My documents, clicking
on tools, and clicking on folder options.

Did doing that work??

Or From the Control Panel - switch the Category view, to Classic view...
can you See Folder Options now??

The instructions in the article are written for the default
configuration of Control Panel which is the Category View. Your
computer has Control Panel configured with the Classic View.
You should see Folder Options among the icons in the right hand
pane. Double click on it.

If you're still unable to launch Folder Options, do the
following;

Go to Start and click on Run.
Enter the following in the Open box,

control folders

Click OK.

I've gone to "fplder options" and was already in Category View. No matter
which I press, the upper or the lower, there is no "Appearance and themes"
entry in the Control Panel.

I did it, and it worked. Cliking a REG file now opens it in Notepad.
Thanx!
