Chage Icon for Drives in Explorer?

This is an issue on one WinXP Pro SP3 desktop at work.

In Explorer (My Computer) the icon for C: is wrong, but all other
drives have the correct icons. Of course, there is NO "Change icon"
options for drives.

The icon for C: = icon for Add/Remove Programs

Have no idea when/who/how this happened. The user no longer is with
the company, but I would like to get the correct (default) hard drive
icon displayed for C:.

I Googled and found steps to add keys in...
HLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\...

*** "DriveIcons\C\DefaultIcon" ***

....and set ... the default value to an icon file.

Tired this fix, but did NOT work. C: icon still = Add/Remove Programs
icon

Anyone have a way to get the C: icon back to normal?

Read this article http://smallvoid.com/article/windows-icon-cache.html
and see if you think any of it may work for you. Of particular interest, I
think, is the part about IconCache and ShellIconCache.

You could download and Install Tweak UI from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...powertoys.mspx.

Tweak UI includes some useful configuration and repair options,
which include "Rebuilding all Explorer Icons"

This will do it...
Icon Phile

Free

http://www.freeware-guide.com/OldGoo...IconPhile.html

Icon Phile is a small program for customizing windows's system icons. Using
IconPhile you can change the standard Desktop icons (MY Computer, Recycle
Bin, Network Neighborhood, etc..), drive icons (Hard drive, Floppy drives,
external drives), folder icons (Open and Closed Folders, Printers, DialUp,
Tasks.. or any individual folder) and more.

Icon Phile's main feature is document icon customization. Using iconphile
you can change the icon for any File Type on your computer. Icon Phile
provides a faster and simpler interface for changing these icons. Moreover,
Icon Phile lets you change File Type icons by extension. The file list is
totally user configurable, making the process of finding the file you want
to change faster and much more powerful.

IconPhile's interface fully supports drag and drop, meaning you can drag
icon files straight from you computer onto the icon you want to change in
IconPhile. Icon Customization has never been faster.

Here's a short list of features:

supports cursors, file types, desktop, folder and drive icons

quick drag and drop interface for changing icons

change a number of icons at once (use multiselect)

register new extensions

undo changes

change icons for files with different extensions that are all of the same
"File Type"

see only the file types you want to see

save icon schemes, that include file icons

auto-create themes based on icon names

Hadn't thought of this. I have Icon Phile installed at home, to
change the icon for TXT files.

I'll give it a try for drive icons.

OPPS - error, error...

Sure enough the original (not very smart) user had an "autorun.inf"
and "setup.exe" in the root.

This WAS what caused the C: icon to be wrong.

I did have to rebuild the Icon-Cache, which was easy since "Icon
Phile" includes a Tool to do just that.

After reboot, C: icon is correct (default).

Thanks to everyone for advice given.
