Central navigation?

Sorry if this is a basic question, but I am struggling.

Currently I have basic HTML navigation which is fine, but if I ever want to
edit it I need to change it on every single page. Is there a way to have a
'central' navigation system, i.e. when I change something on the master
navigation it will edit on all pages?

Also, I want images rather than words to be the link AND I want different
bars. I need a a list of linked images to the left, a list of linked images
to the right, a basic bar at the top with 'contact, about us' etc and a bar
at the bottom with the policy link. Obviously the content in the centre
changes on each page, but I want those bars to remain the same.

I have no idea where to start. Could someone please point me towards a
simple tutorial? I do not have much technical know-how.

Thank you in advance.

If you have FontPage 2003 or Expression Web then look at Dynamic Web Templates (DWT), for earlier versions of FrontPage include files will help.
The navigation goes on the DWT which is attached to pages containg content only. With Include pages the navigation goes into pages containing ONLY the navigation - these are then included in the content pages at appropriate locations.

See http://any-expression.com/expression...-dwt-ebook.htm
Although for Expression Web, most applies to FrontPage 2003.

Thank you, that is very helpful.

But how to I create a DWP template? The tutorials all tell you what to do
once you have it, but how to I make it in the first place?

Create a page with all the bits you need on _every_ page, then use
Format->Dynamic Web Template->Manage Content regions
to add editable regions for the content.
Finally, File->Save and choose DWT from the drop down list on the save dialogue.

You don't say what version of frontpage you are using... if it is frontpage
03 then you can use dwts (dynamic web templates)

FrontPage DWT ebook (free)
http://frontpage-ebooks.com/dwt-ebook.htm

if not then you need to use Page Includes
