There have been a lot of posts here about Cell and using it for other
than first person shooting. Here is a webcast that might be of interest.

http://www.techonline.com/community/...ing/38325?al=1

"Overview:
The Cell microprocessor brings significant benefit outside the gaming
market. It offers dramatically improved performance for
graphic-intensive workloads and computationally intensive applications.
Example targets include current and new applications in medical imaging,
industrial inspection, aerospace and defense, seismic processing, and
telecommunications.
This webcast will overview the Cell architecture. In addition we will
provide simple program examples to illustrate key Cell development
tools. We will contrast the Cell's SPU instruction set with the popular
PowerPC Altivec® extensions (which are also found inside Cell). We will
talk at a high level about the benefits that Cell brings to a few
specific applications that are graphic or computationally intensive."

Definitely more than just a toy.

I believe the Cell Project is shelved.

Once Cell is included in the kind of project that Mercury Computer
Systems builds, it will be a _very_ safe bet that the project will not
be shelved, as it will be backed by the full faith and credit of the US
Treasury. _You_ may not be able to buy them at some point in the
future, but the customers of Mercury Computer Systems will.

Much of the pooh-poohing and bad-mouthing of Cell that I've seen and
heard comes from players who are more or less in the same DSP sandbox
as Mercury Computer Systems, so having Mercury as a customer seems
significant. OTOH, Mercury already uses the Power architecture, so its
adoption of Cell shouldn't be such a surprise.
