My Win 2000 Media Player is playing CD's and Mp3's too
fast, though it has not always done so. When I go to
View/Enhancements I do not see an option for Play Speed. I
have downloaded latest updates. Any other ideas? Thanks.

I had the same problem. Try this, it worked for me:

Select Options... from Tools menu
Click on Devices tab
Click on Audio CD
Click Properties button
Set Playback to Analog (mine was set to Digital when I had
the problem)

I had the same issue on a Dell OptiPlex GX240
The problem turned out to be the sound card driver
The MP3's played fast using 2 different versions on Media Player, a
well as Winamp and Quicktime

Once I downloaded the newest driver, the problem went away
